Medical Education Building Renovation

The Medical Education Building first opened in 2009 with a state-of-the-art clinical skills/simulation center and instructional spaces. To stay ahead of advancing modalities and innovative technologies for teaching, the School of Medicine prioritized major renovations of the Medical Education Building which began in September 2022 and includes new active learning spaces and a brand-new, modern anatomy lab.

New Anatomy Lab (January 2024)

In January 2024, the new, state-of-the-art Anatomy lab opened for medical student instruction. The Anatomy lab, which lived in the basement of the Med Surge II building for many years, is now co-located in the Medical Education Building with the renovated active learning and student study spaces. The modernized lab features surgical arms above each table that feature a light, camera and monitor enabling content to be projected from the instructor’s workstation to all tables and the ability to share interesting cadaveric findings from one table out to students at the other tables. iPads, a technology featured in the old Anatomy lab, will continue to be available to access didactic content. Another exciting addition for the students is the brand new locker room adjacent to the lab with changing areas and showers.

Ribbon Cutting (November 2023)

The renovated learning spaces on the third floor of the Medical Education Building opened in November 2023. These spaces include a new, large flat-floor learning classroom with collaboration pods and 18 adjacent breakout rooms for small-group activities.

Progress (July 2023)

Great progress has been made on the fourth floor student spaces. Below are some recent photos showing the student lounge, study and relaxation spaces that will open to the students during the MS1 orientation on August 1, 2023.

Design and Renderings

Gensler, the globally recognized architecture firm, was hired to provide our students a space to match their spirit and abilities while providing collaborative and effective study and learning spaces.

The following are some renderings of the renovated building we expect to see open to students, faculty and staff in Fall 2023.
