Inkling Produces the First Interactive Anatomy Textbook for the iPad- Essential Clinical Anatomy by Moore, Agur and Dalley

Inkling has released an iPad version of Essential Clinical Anatomy (ECA) 4th ed. By Moore, Agur and Dalley. This version presents the core anatomical concepts found in Moore’s Clinically Oriented Anatomy, Sixth Edition. All ten iPads in the UC Irvine Anatomy lab have ECA which students can reference during their dissections.

You can download the first section “Introduction to Clinical Anatomy” free! I highly recommend the free download so you can begin to experience how Inkling is creating a textbook that utilizes many of the capabilities of the iPad. ECA can be bought for $64.99. You can also buy individual chapters for $9.99.

In the great Inkling style, it is easy to see the nine chapters and auxiliary sections in panels on the left portion of the screen. A more detailed overview of each section containing figures (including labeling quizzes) shows to the right. Complete text and larger figures show to the right of the detailed overview. It is very easy to move between panels and figures enlarge when tapped in either panel. In addition, when referenced within the text, one can tap on the figure number to access it. There are numerous labeling quizzes as well as a final quiz at the end of each chapter.

Interspersed between the chapter sections are clinical correlates. There are also numerous video clips (that require wireless or 3G connection).

The search function will search chapters or the entire book. There is the option to continue your search via Google or Wikipedia. I especially like the ability to search via “Type”–your results will be divided by Image, Reading, Quiz or Video. Annotation includes Bookmarks, the ability to highlight and take notes within the text. I especially like the ability to see “History”…it makes flipping between pages much easier.

UCI medical students should either take a good look at ECA in the anatomy lab or download the free trial to see how Inkling is taking learning anatomy via the iPad to a new level.
