iMedEd Release Notes Version 05.22.15

The Division of Instructional Technologies will be launching several new systems over the course of the next few months and we wanted to keep you informed of the transitions throughout the summer through weekly updates we will call “iMedEd Release Notes”. Please look out for this email each Friday if you are interested in following our progress.

This week, our focus is on the Canvas and Ilios systems.

Canvas

Canvas is our new learning management system (LMS). An LMS is a software tool that enables you to support administration of a course with features like course web pages, grade books, online quizzing, discussion boards, etc. Canvas will replace the features that we have previously taken advantage of through EEE and MERLiN. It will become the primary interface for course materials by our students and the location of Med Ed Calendars for faculty/staff/students in the Fall.

Canvas Progress

  • We launched a pilot of Canvas on March 30 and four courses have successfully used this LMS (thank you to our pioneering course directors!):

1. MS1 Neuroscience course led by Dr. Ana Solodkin

2. MS4 CFIV course led by Dr. Megan Osborn and Dr. Mark Langdorf

3. MS3 CFIII led by Dr. Shahram Lotfipour

4. MS3 Radiology Clerkship led by Dr. Mohammad Helmy

  • General feedback from students so far about Canvas is very positive.
  • All MS3s have been trained on Canvas and will use it throughout their clerkships starting May 26. We appreciate the effort our clerkship directors/coordinators have spent preparing their courses for this launch.
  • iMedEd will shift focus to preparing the MS1 and MS2 courses after the MS3 launch.
  • The UC Irvine Main Campus also launched a larger scale pilot with 6000 students on March 30th. We are actively communicating with the OIT/EEE who is managing the pilot to share feedback/resources.

Ilios

Ilios is our curriculum management tool that allows us to map the School of Medicine curriculum to identify what is being taught in our courses and find gaps/redundanices. We have a requirement to report our curriculum to the AAMC yearly in a specific format and Ilios is the tool that enables us to do this as well. From the faculty perspective for the MS1 and MS2 courses, the workflow to upload session information, MeSH terms, topics, learning materials and objectives will not change with the addition of Canvas.
