iMedEd Release Notes Version 5.13.16

The New Doctor’s Bag

Technology is fundamentally changing the way that physicians and patients approach medicine and healthcare. Some proponents of technology would claim that the physical exam is no longer the primary source for all diagnoses and “classic” physical examination skills are unnecessary and falling by the wayside. Many would argue that aspects of the physical exam still remain central to the evaluation of our patients. As new tools emerge, such as digital stethoscopes, oto- and ophthalmoscopes, handheld ultrasound, pulse oximetry and electrocardiograms, as well as visual diagnosis devices, it becomes critically important for medical educators to determine their utility for medical education and more importantly patient care, especially as many of these technologies are being marketed directly to patients. Today “with a few hundred dollars and a Bluetooth-enabled smartphone, you can have the diagnostic capabilities to create a portable clinic on par with a traditional doctor’s office.” To learn more about some of these devices for a “new doctor’s bag”, read: Doctors go digital: Smartphone attachments are replacing traditional tools of the trade.

Any faculty or residents who are interested in exploring devices for the new doctor’s bag for student or patient education should contact Dr. Warren Wiechmann, Associate Dean for Clinical Science Education and Educational Technology at wiechmaw@uci.edu.
