iMedEd Release Notes Version 3.9.17

Google Glass – Through the Eyes of the Patient

On February 27-28, 2017, all first-year medical students participated in the first-ever Kindness/Empathy Clinical Experience. During these sessions in the Clinical Skills Center, students rotated through cases that were designed to help them practice their kindness and empathy skills as part of the innovative kindness curriculum for first- and second-year medical students. Standardized patients wore Google Glass during each session so that feedback could be provided to the students on their performance “through the patient’s eyes”. This model of first-person video feedback has been used successfully for the past three years during the Family Medicine OSCE (clinical exams), but was the first time we offered this type of feedback to our MS1’s.

Overall, students found the Kindness/Empathy Clinical Experience to be a valuable opportunity to help them improve their doctoring and communication skills and we look forward to continue providing such experiences to them in the future.
